In this, the third and final artist ‘in conversation’ event, as part of the Recurring Intricacies exhibition, painter Gill Ord talks with Amanda Benson about the sculpture she makes, especially the three works in the current show at The Sherborne.
Gill Ord is an artist from the North East of England who is now based in London. She has worked in the same studio in Bow for over thirty years. Her painting practice spans a range of scales and media, shaped by time spent observing and responding to place, with much of her work evolving through residencies and workshops.
Ord is a founding member of the Braziers International Artists’ Workshop and Supernormal Festival; she has been a painting tutor and talked internationally on the importance of artist-led projects and is a mentor on the Turps correspondence course.
Amanda Benson is a sculptor and educator based in Hackney, London. She has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and the USA. Shows include The Ikon Gallery, Kettles Yard, Royal Academy, Galerie Est Paris and W139 Amsterdam. She has been a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors since 2021. Central to Amanda Benson’s sculpture is the belief in the handmade and the transformative potential of everyday materials. Pieces start from sketches or the material itself, with her practice exploring the relationship between form, physicality and colour.
