Christiane Monarchi in conversation with artist Helen Sear

In this first artist’s ‘in conversation’ event, part of the Recurring Intricacies exhibition, Christiane Monarchi talks with artist Helen Sear about the themes and ideas that permeate her artistic career, especially her work in The Sherborne show.

Helen Sear RA rose to prominence in the late 1980s when she worked primarily with mixed-media installation, performance, and video.  Her photographic works became widely recognised in the 1991 British Council exhibition, De-Composition: Constructed Photography in Britain, which toured Latin America and Eastern Europe. Sear was the first woman to represent Wales at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. She is included in major collections, such as the UK Government Art Collection. She was elected a Royal Academician in 2024 and currently lives and works in France and the UK.

Christiane Monarchiis a founding co-editor of Hapax Magazine, a biannual print publication that has been commissioning new photographic ideas since 2021. She is the founding editor of Photomonitor, which has published over 1,400 online features since 2011, and she is collaborating with the University for the Creative Arts and bookRoom. Christiane is a curator, lecturer, and artist mentor, and she has served on several non-profit boards, including Photofusion, The Centre for British Photography, and the steering committee of Fast Forward, Women in Photography.
