Bertrand Tavernier’s A Sunday in the Country (Un dimanche à la campagne, 1984) is a tender, lyrical film set in 1912, just before the First World War. It follows Monsieur Ladmiral, an elderly painter reflecting on his life and art, who invites his children and grandchildren to his country home for a leisurely Sunday lunch. Through small, beautifully observed moments—the playful mischief of the grandchildren, the lively energy of his daughter, the quiet tensions between father and son—the film explores universal themes of ageing, memory, creativity, family ties, and the fleeting nature of time.
Praised for its delicate pacing, rich cinematography, and emotional honesty, the film won the Best Director award at Cannes and three César Awards (Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress). It remains one of Tavernier’s most acclaimed works—an elegant, deeply human portrait of love, regret, and connection, all unfolding over the course of a single summer day.
