A big part of The Sherborne’s transformation has been the creation of its beautiful outdoor space — a collaboration that celebrates sustainability, creativity, and community.
The garden was designed by Angela Morley, a wildlife-friendly garden designer, with Castle Gardens advising, supplying, and planting once the space had been prepared by Tom Carter and his team. To ensure the plants established and thrived, the team enriched the soil with a natural conditioner and Rootgrow, a mycorrhizal fungi that supports healthy soil and plant life. The borders were then mulched with Bloomin Amazing, a peat-free soil enricher and weed inhibitor produced as a by-product of renewable energy in Poundbury.
All planting is sustained by an innovative rainwater harvesting system, which collects water from the building’s roofs and gently irrigates the borders through underground seephoses — a sustainable approach that not only nurtures the plants but also helps reduce local flooding.
“A big part of the transformation was the outdoor space, and we are delighted to have been part of such an exciting and positive project in Sherborne… We hope the community gets as much joy from The Sherborne as we did working on the project. We look forward to seeing how it enriches the local area as a landmark for the arts.”
— Mike Burks, The Gardens Group
As The Sherborne’s cultural and artistic programme continues to evolve, the garden will grow as a living extension of its creative vision — a place for outdoor exhibitions, performances, and community gatherings that celebrate both nature and art.
