Restoration of a Georgian Building in an Urban Setting
WINNER Sherborne House, Sherborne, Dorset, by Spase Architects and Surveyors
“We are honoured again to be awarded for our work at the National stage. This time by The Georgian Group for our work to the Grade I listed building, Sherborne House in Dorset. We were praised for our work to restore the Georgian house and take it off the At Risk register.” – SPASE
“Exterior walls, historic panelling, and chimneypieces have been repaired, inappropriate paints removed and new decorative finishes introduced. Central to the project has been the conservation of Sir James Thornhill’s c.1726 decorative scheme for the staircase.
Insulation has been introduced where possible to enhance the building’s thermal performance, and air source heat pumps, mechanical ventilation and heat recovery installed to reduce the scheme’s carbon footprint.
After a 30 year period of uncertainty, the Georgian house is publicly accessible, has been removed from the risk register, and, complemented by a new building, has taken on a new life.”
Ensuring Michael Cannon’s legacy, which is very much centred around giving back to the community and creating true civic pride, is realised for all to enjoy, is a powerful nod to “exceptional design and Michael & Sally’s brilliant vision.”
Sally Cannon noted, “This is an accolade indeed; Michael would be so proud.”
